Just want to throw something out there to see what kinda response I can get. What I would really like to see is for our International to step up to the plate and check on getting every Steelworker insurance benefits. With over 700,000 steelworkers there should be some kind of insurance plan that we could get at a really good price. If they could do this the only thing that we would have to fight the company for is how much of the plan price they would pay. By doing this it would take the insurance piece completely off the table. The only thing that I have heard is that it would be impossible to do we are scattered all over the country. Sooo what if we are. There has to be some company out there that offers policies that would cover us all. Just think what it would be like at negotiations without having to fight for your insurance benefits. Just think how much time it would free up to allow the committees to focus on other issues. What kinda benefits do you think our International Reps has. Do they have to fight every few years with the risk of losing their benefits.....what I would like to see is the benefits package that out International Reps have. I have asked this question once and it got me nowhere, and this was talking to an International Rep.. Wouldn't it be nice if they had to negotiate with each local in their district, just think if you had to give something up, so would they Wonder how much crap I will get over this post. Let me hear what you think. David Bramlett wick680@uswlocal680.org wick680@yahoo.com

Dave, You said a mouthful....
I said the same thing when we first went to the table. The answer I received is exactly what you heard. The USW isn't in the insurance business and with different laws and guidelines in each state the USW doesn't have the manpower to be all things to all people.
With that said.... I took it upon myself to do my own research. Ironically my research took me to an (X) USW rep and his partner. They educated me in so much that I'm overwhelmed with information and have been provided information that is helping us at the table right now.... within the next week or so we hope to make some progress and be able to move forward on our contract. Actually this same gentleman visited with Luke's committee. Luke is in the same boat as you guys..... 1st dollar insurance and trying to keep it. Dave if you have any questions you can call me anytime.... we are at the negotiation table tomorrow and Wednesday. You can call me anytime after 6:00PM EST. I should be home by then.

I think that's bull, they have the manpower and the means to get this done if they really wanted to help us out. We just have to find a way to make it happen. How does the International accomplish getting all its Reps. Insurance when they are all in different states? These are some of the questions that we need to find answers for. Have to go after what you want, won't come to you. Some things are worth getting into hot water for, believe this is one of them. Get the insurance completely off the table but it will take the Internationals help. I want a lot don't I I'll be talking to you soon. Take care and as always give 'em hell at the table. David |
