A 41 year old man was killed at the Evadale MeadWestvaco mill in Texas. Details are hard to get but what I have found out that it was a chlorate fire. It was sparked when he rode through some dried chlorate on a piece of equipment. The Chemical Safety Board was notified and I will post more information when it becomes available. Please be careful out there.

Otis Collier was the man's name. He was operating a Bobcat. He ran over an area of road where they had unloaded chlorate cars. The Bobcat created a spark and ignited an explosion. He was a 16 year employee of the MeadWestvaco mill.

This very thing is why we must continue the safety program here at the mill. We have to continue watching out for one another.
Take care and hope to see you at the Union meetings tomorrow.

This stuff is nasty. We had an incident a year ago here in Escanaba. A person was going to clean out a tank that held this stuff. The tank was drained and rinsed before the cleaning was to be started. As the person removed the cover from the top it caused an explosion. This person was in a burn center for months and still hasn't returned to work, and my never return. This person was fortunate that another employee was near and was able to douse the flames and guide the individual to safety. If that person was not there, the likelihood of this being a fatality is almost certain.

Please look out for each other....

Sincerely,

You know as bad as this stuff is, it would seem the company would take extra steps to insure the safety of the workers around this stuff. Is water the only thing that will neturalize this stuff? If there is something else out there that will help out we as Union members should look into it and then go to the company with the facts and solutions to the problem. Could help prevent another fatality in one of our mills.
Plus it would be nice if we could get a group to hourly members involved in some sort of safety program that all the mills would support each other in. They could meet with each other to discuss different safety concerns at each of the mills and maybe one of the other mills may have a solution....just think of the possibilities, not to mention bringing the mills closer together.
Just a thought.
