I just wanted to let everyone know that Local 21 in Escanaba overwhelmingly turned down the company's contract offer today. We had 722 members show up to vote which is 88% of our membership.
While we are not releasing any numbers I can tell you the committee couldn't have expect such a solid stand by the membership. We were confident it would be defeated but the numbers were staggering. Our membership spoke loud and clear and I couldn't be more grateful for such a strong message.
We'll be taking this "NO" vote to Pittsburgh with us in August to discuss our plan moving ahead and our expectations of some support from the USW.

Nothing but a bunch of hardasses there in Esky  Hell can't ya see the company is there trying to give you the world plus some...just can't make you guys happy. Maybe they should have offered you a ham or something.
Really all I can say is hang in there. I hope they wake up and start talking straight without all the bullshit. If they really want a Contract they need to at least meet you half way.
Bryon, you and your committee have done your membership one hell of a job, they could not ask for no better than you all. Great job and keep up the hard fight. I'll be seeing you in a couple of weeks.

88% membership turnout for the vote on 2/26/2010 and another "NO" vote.
Better get the shovels out and start digging in cause its gonna get really ugly.
We have the pleasure of a visit of the NewPage Leadership Team here at the Wickliffe Mill Thursday. Hell they even mentioned the Escanaba Mill. They even addressed our mill getting back involved in the safety programs and LSS. They think that we are taking the wrong road. The way we look at it we are going to have to watch out for our own safety cause they won't. Let's see....lets cut out the monthly safety meetings along with the safety action teams oh yea, and lets not forget the SafeR+ and the safety incentives. But we are all about the safety here at the Wickliffe Mill....all we can say is "bullshit"
What was said in the meeting at 11:30 Thursday was that the Union will be taking on the task of getting the safety of the Mill up and going without the management involvement, once this is established and running good, then we will ask the management teams if they want to participate, but they will not be taking charge as they have done in the past just to run it in the ground.
Take care and most of all be SAFE, you are the ones doing all the work, not them so watch out for yourself and others please.

David, I just want to thank you and your committee for the strong support you showed us in Taylor. There is no doubt in my mind that your mill will be next. Bill Smith is ruthless.
Remember....you will only get what you are strong enough to take!
Thanks again.
